The TV landscape has made way for the American presidential election this Tuesday night. Polls in the United States will progressively close in each state this Tuesday, November 5, from 6pm ET as Kamala Harris and Donald Trump go head to head in the 60th presidential election.

But as months of campaigning end in anticipation at 11pm Irish time, some Irish people across the Atlantic may be keen to stay up overnight to follow all the latest updates.

Luckily, multiple channels on the box, from RTE to Sky News, have made room for their own coverage of the election on their schedules. Here's what viewers need to know.

RTE will have dedicated overnight coverage on the RTE News App, RTE One and the RTE Player. RTE One television will broadcast a US Presidential Election Special programme from 11.20pm on Tuesday continuing late into the night. Presented by Miriam O'Callaghan in Washington and David McCullagh in Dublin, they will be joined by a range of guests to bring viewers live results, analysis and reaction along with regular updates from colleagues in CBS News. Live television coverage will continue with the simulcast of CBS News: US Presidential Election coverage from 3.30am to 7.00am on RTE One and RTE Player.

Before that, Virgin Media's The Tonight Show will be live on Virgin Media One from 10pm to 11pm, bringing viewers the latest political news.

Meanwhile, BBC viewers will be able to tune in to BBC One from 10.40pm to follow the broadcaster's overnight coverage of the election, anchored from Washington DC by Irish journalist Caitriona Perry along with Sumi Somaskanda. At 6am, the programme will be combined with BBC Breakfast, running through to 9.30am with Jon Kay.

Over on ITV, Tom Bradby reprises hosting duties as he will anchor the channel's coverage of the presidential election from 10.45pm before handing over to Susanna Reid and Ed Balls at 6am, who will welcome guests such as Stormy Daniels, Jon Sopel and Donald Trump's nephew Fred Trump III.

Both shows will be coming live from Washington and Anuska Asthana, ITV News ' Deputy Political Editor, will take charge of the results as they come in. The broadcast will also feature live crosses to CNN every hour.

Partnered with CNN and deemed "the definitive way to watch the US election in the UK", Channel 4 has also decided to keep its viewers up to date with all the latest on the election. Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Matt Frei, Emily Maitlis and Jeremy Vine will take the helm of their own programme from 10pm, welcoming impressive guests throughout the evening, including Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, David Miliband, Democrat Carol Moseley Braun, Malcolm Turnbull and Republicans John Bolton and Sean Spicer.

While Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have been running close together in recent weeks, some victors in the past have been named late on election night or early the following morning. To make matters worse, a narrow victory could lead to recounts and other delays.

This was notably the case during the 2020 election, which took place on November 3. American citizens waited four days for Joe Biden to be declared a winner by US TV networks. However, Georgia and North Carolina results are expected from 1am and 4am Irish time. The remaining results are due to come in from 5am on Wednesday, November 6.
