FAI hit by UEFA fine over booi

The FAI has been fined €10,000 by UEFA over home fans booing God Save The King before the Nations League clash between Ireland and England at the Aviva Stadium in September.

But the FA has been hit by a heftier fine of €12,500 for the away fans' booing of Amhrán na bhFiann, as England supporters having previously booed opposing anthems

The €10,000 fine doled out to the FAI is the standard penalty for national anthem disturbances.

The organisation also received fines for the lighting of flares (€9,250) during the match and for a fan invading the pitch (€6,000).

The booing of the anthems drew criticism in the aftermath of September's Nations League match.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin said at the time: "I wasn't happy with it.

"I think when we’re hosting any country in the world, we should pay respect to their anthem, just as they should pay respect to our anthem.

"But the vast, vast majority of fans did pay respect, but you get that, I mean it’s football.

"And I thought overall the match was played in a wonderful atmosphere, there was a very happy atmosphere in the Aviva.

On the pitch, Ireland suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Three Lions after Declan Rice and Jack Grealish, two former Ireland underage stars, found the net in Dublin.

Heimir Hallgrimsson's side play Finland next on 14 November at the Aviva before travelling to London to take on England at Wembley on 17 November.
