The Republic of Ireland are in Athens tonight to face bogey side Greece. They lost three times to them since last June - twice under Stephen Kenny and last month in Hallgrimsson’s second game in charge.
Both sides go into the game buoyed by wins on Thursday with Ireland winning 2-1 away to Finland while Greece shocked England by the same scoreline at Wembley.
And they did so just 24 hours after learning of the tragic death of their English-born international George Baldock, who played against Ireland in Athens last summer.
New Greece boss Ivan Jovanovic has guided his team to top spot in this Nations League game after winning all three of his games in charge to date.
Irish boss Hallgrimsson has said he now wants to unlock some of the more battling traits of his young squad.
His message ahead of tonight’s Nations League clash with Greece in Piraeus is that his players are at their best when they are on the front foot and are getting in opponents’ faces.
“It was always in the memory, that's how I see this nation, tough people, hard working, really honest, willing to take the duel and go into the battle,” said the Icelander.
“That is my presumption coming in, that the Irish team was like that.
“Getting to know them as characters, there's a lot of fighters, we just need to bring that confidence back so that it will shine through every game and every duel we have on the pitch, to get this mentality to shine.”
