Greece v Ireland LIVE updates

The Republic of Ireland are in Athens tonight to face bogey side Greece. They lost three times to them since last June - twice under Stephen Kenny and last month in Hallgrimsson’s second game in charge.

Both sides go into the game buoyed by wins on Thursday with Ireland winning 2-1 away to Finland while Greece shocked England by the same scoreline at Wembley.

And they did so just 24 hours after learning of the tragic death of their English-born international George Baldock, who played against Ireland in Athens last summer.

New Greece boss Ivan Jovanovic has guided his team to top spot in this Nations League game after winning all three of his games in charge to date.

Irish boss Hallgrimsson has said he now wants to unlock some of the more battling traits of his young squad.

His message ahead of tonight’s Nations League clash with Greece in Piraeus is that his players are at their best when they are on the front foot and are getting in opponents’ faces.

“It was always in the memory, that's how I see this nation, tough people, hard working, really honest, willing to take the duel and go into the battle,” said the Icelander.

“That is my presumption coming in, that the Irish team was like that.

“Getting to know them as characters, there's a lot of fighters, we just need to bring that confidence back so that it will shine through every game and every duel we have on the pitch, to get this mentality to shine.”

Sell out on the cards

Greece fans haven't always come out in their numbers to back their national team, with their tribal club football scene top of the pecking order. When Ireland played - and lost - to Greece in Athens in June 2023, the AEK stadium was only half fill. But with their team now top of this Nations League group after three wins from three under their new manager, a sell-out of 33,000 is expected tonight.

Tsimikas out

Liverpool's Kostas Tsimikas has to make do with a place on the Greece bench tonight after failing to shake off the fever that forced him to miss Thursday's 2-1 win away to England. Speaking here in Piraeus yesterday, Greece manager Ivan Jovanovic - who has won all three of his games in charge since succeeding Gus Poyet - said he would afford Tsimikas every chance to make the starting XI, but he has missed out

Parrott rewarded

Festy Ebosele may have made the more eye-catching introduction off the bench in Helsinki but he has to make do with a place on the bench again. Instead, it's another of the Helsinki subs, Troy Parrott, who is rewarded with a start after a run of good form for his Dutch club AZ Alkmaar. Ireland fans will be looking forward to a potentially mouthwatering partnership up top with Evan Ferguson, who starts only his second game of the season.

Asked in yesterday's pre-match press conference if he could see Parrott and Ferguson starting together in the same team, Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson cut to the chase and beamed: "Sure".

Good evening and welcome to the blog

Hello everybody and welcome to our live coverage of Republic of Ireland's clash against Greece in the UEFA Nations League.

The doom and gloom surrounding the Boys in Green was lifted somewhat with last Thursday's come from behind 2-1 over Finland in Helsinki, a win which handed Heimir Hallgrimsson his first win in charge of the side.

Another win today would go along way to increasing supporters' confidence in a side that has struggled to win in recent times.

But that will not be an easy task. Tonight is the fourth time Ireland have faced Greece in a little over a year and at the moment, the record reads 3 wins to 0 in favour of Greece.

That sequence began in Athens last Summer and was extended with consecutive 2-0 losses at the Aviva Stadiums, the first of which essentially costing Stephen Kenny his job.

Kick-off for tonight's game is set for 7.45pm and we have Paul O'Hehir and Mark McCadden at the stadium to report on a huge night in this Nations League campaign.
