A number of former Irish players have led tributes to George Baldock, the former Premier League star who passed away suddenly on Wednesday.

George spent most of his career in England, playing Premier League football with Sheffield United in the 2020-21 and 2023-24 seasons.

But tragic news broke on Wednesday that the 31-year-old had been found dead after emergency services were called to the scene.

After moving to Sheffield United in 2017, the defender played with several Irish stars, including David McGoldrick, John Egan, and Enda Stevens.

McGoldrick also took to social media to share snaps with his old teammate.

Former Ireland stars Clinton Morrison and Conor Hourihane also commented on McGoldrick's post as they remembered the defender.

Sami Carruthers, who previously played underage for Ireland, penned a heartfelt tribute to his old pal. The pair played on MK Dons together between 2014 and 2017.

"@georgebaldock brother I don't know what to say. I love you man. I miss you. You was my best mate for years and years and I was so lucky to live my football career with you and live with you.

"The world has lost an amazing human but I know your in heaven my friend. I will cherish every memory I made with you you'll always be in my heart. Rest in peace."

Baldock lined out against Ireland in their Euro 2024 qualifiers last year and the FAI have paid tribute to the defender.

"We’re incredibly saddened by the news of George Baldock’s passing this evening George played against Ireland in the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying campaign last year - and played with a number of Irish players at club level in his career

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends, and also with the players and staff at the Greek Football Federation at this sad time."

Mirror UK reports that Baldock was found in the pool and emergency services were called, with a doctor part of the response unit verifying that he had tragically died.
