Linesman Rob Smith was helped onto a stretcher after a medical incident during West Brom's home fixture against Middlesbrough.

The incident, which occurred in the first half, led to an eight-minute delay as Smith received medical attention after sitting down on the pitch.

He was tended to by medics from both the home club and their visitors before being helped onto a stretcher before being replaced on the line by fourth official Jacob Miles.

It later emerged on social media that Miles was replaced as fourth official by Premier League referee Eddie Smart, who was in the home crowd as a fan.

West Brom confirmed that the stoppage was due to Smith receiving treatment via their official X account. They posted: "There's a stoppage in play as one of the referee's assistants receives treatment."

The match carried on after Smith had been taken for treatment, with the two sides going at the break level at 0-0.

Tuesday night's game saw West Brom pay tribute to Mark Townsend, a Baggies fan who sadly passed away at the age of 57 after suffering a medical incident during Saturday's match against Sheffield Wednesday.

A West Brom spokesperson said in the aftermath of Mr Townsend's death: "The club is in regular contact with the supporter's family and again asks that they are allowed to mourn their loss privately.

"Albion will work with Sheffield Wednesday, the EFL and all relevant parties to establish the circumstances relating to the supporter’s tragic passing."

Baggies head coach Carlos Corberan had dedicated Tuesday night's match to Townsend prior to kick-off. He told Sky Sports: "Unfortunately we received the very bad news after the previous game. From this moment, he and his family have been in our thoughts all the time.

"We are going to try and dedicate this game for him because it's very painful to have lost him."
