Roy Keane has insisted that he's always been as cool as a cucumber when his daughters have started dating.

The Manchester United legend is a well-known pundit on our TV screens, including Sky Sports' Premier League coverage for the last five years and working for ITV on their domestic and international offerings. That's on top of co-hosting the Stick to Football podcast, which gives fans plenty of insight about his broadcast career.

But the Cork man has largely kept his private life away from the public eye over the years. He married wife Theresa when he was still in the midst of his playing days in 1997, and they went on to have five children together - four of whom are girls. Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah and Alanna are now all grown adults.

During an appearance on the RTE Tommy Tiernan how last year, Keane was asked what it was like having so many females in the house. His blunt answer of "brilliant" caused the studio audience to erupt with laughter, Mirror UK reports.

In response, Keane added: "No it is, brilliant. Really good kids, they're good, very good kids."

Tiernan then asked him to explain the hardest part of being a dad, which he struggled to answer before screwing his face up. The host humorously interjected: "Are you f***ing kidding me are ya?" Keane shook his head and replied: "No, they're ok. Listen when they get a bit older, I suppose boyfriends and that type of carry on, yeah that can be (shrugs)."

Given his reputation as a hard man on and off the pitch, Tiernan joked: "I'd say it'd be fairly intimidating meeting you now in all fairness. Clint Eastwood in the kitchen." But Keane again played the situation down and insisted he wouldn't be bothered, much to the intrigue of the audience.

He argued: "You'd be very surprised. Surely that's the same for everybody." Tiernan wasn't convinced, saying: "You're so guarded. Maybe you're just so calm and settled and strong."

Keane stood firm and said: "No, quite relaxed yeah. Do you want me to do a somersault or something? Very relaxed, nice drive up, we're good."

While insights into his life away from football remain few and far between, the pundit will likely be back and firing on all cylinders on Super Sunday today as his former club United welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford.
