Shane Lowry credits 'a few too

Shane Lowry stormed back into contention on day two of the Spanish Open and put the turnaround down to a 'few too many' drinks with a good friend.

After a poor opening round of four over on Thursday, Offaly ace Lowry produced a round of 66 on Friday to get back into the hunt at the DP World Tour event. Had no birdies on day one but on Friday he found five birdies and made no bogeys to move into 23rd place.

"Yesterday was tough, I felt like I played ok but wasn't making birdies. It's hard to hit greens out there. I just kind of went through the motions," he said afterwards. "I've been on the road a lot lately and I think it was getting to me yesterday a little bit. I relaxed a little bit today and went out there and played freely. Thankfully it was a good day to make the weekend. I don't ever like missing cuts so I go out there and try my hardest and thankfully it was a good day."

When he was asked about the technical differences he made to his game for the second round, the Offaly man laughed. The real secret to the reversal of form and fortunes?

"I'f I'm being honest, I had dinner with Tyrell Hatton last night and we had a couple too many glasses of wine so maybe that made me go out and play a bit freer today," Lowry smiled. "I just went out and played carefree. It's a funny old game. On to the weekend."

English ace Hatton shot a round of 68 on day two after his few drinks with Lowry so maybe that's the secret to producing your best on tour sometimes.

Local favourite Angel Hidalgo leads the tournament on 10 under at the cut mark. Another Spaniard Jon Rahm is on five under in a tie for third while Tommy Fleetwood of England is a shot back from that.

Yesterday, Lowry had reposted a short video of himself playing four holes in 40 seconds for the DP World Tour's social media channels, a four-hole stretch which Lowry jokingly referred to as 'The worst four holes of my year,' captioning the post: "It didn’t get much better today."

Before the tournament, Lowry took in Real Madrid's 3-2 win over Alaves as they closed to within just one point of La Liga table-toppers Barcelona
