Christian Eriksen appeared to openly question Erik ten Hag’s decision to substitute him during Manchester United ’s disappointing draw with FC Twente.

United were held to a 1-1 draw by the Dutch side at Old Trafford on Wednesday night as Eriksen’s first-half goal was cancelled out by Sam Lammers’ strike. Twente goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall had an inspired night to ensure that United kicked off their Europa League campaign in underwhelming fashion.

Eriksen had been the hero of the night when he blasted a loose ball into the top corner to give United the lead. The high from his third goal in a week did not last, however, as he was robbed in possession, allowing Lammers to sprint through and beat Andre Onana at his near post with a powerful finish.

The equaliser came in the 68th minute and Ten Hag reacted 11 minutes later, making a triple substitution to introduce Rasmus Hojlund, Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount. Eriksen was hooked alongside Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee, but the Dane looked shocked and disappointed with the call.

Eriksen was seen looking over to the technical area in disbelief before pointing to himself and standing with his hands on his hips. While Ten Hag briefed Mainoo, it fell on Hojlund to confirm the United manager’s decision to Eriksen, who eventually dragged himself off the pitch.

His reaction was spotted by eagle-eyed United supporters. “Christian Eriksen's reaction to being subbed off ahead of Bruno… Stuff like this are why players turn on managers,” one wrote on Twitter. “Eriksen in disbelief. I'm confused by these subs, too,” another replied.

A third wrote: "When Eriksen saw his number up, he was in disbelief because he didn’t understand it.” A fourth added: "Eriksen couldn’t BELIEVE that he’s getting subbed off."

The substitutions didn’t help United turn things around and Eriksen was still massively disappointed in his post-match interview. “I think we’ll be mostly disappointed as a team. We obviously wanted more but it was far from good enough,” he told TNT Sports.

“Being sad also in the changing room, they looked like they wanted it more than us and that can’t be right and I think personally, you score a goal and you think you’re a matchwinner but then it’s the other way.”

Asked what the mood was like among his team-mates, Eriksen replied: “Everyone is looking at themselves. For most, everyone is a professional footballer, they know what to do and they know what can’t happen. A game like today, obviously we don’t lose, but it feels like a loss and that is something at home against Twente can’t happen.”
