Shane Lowry chose to see the funny side of things after a disastrous opening round at the Open de Espana.

The Offaly native struggled on Thursday, carding a Birdie-less round on his way to shooting 75, leaving him in t-100th place on the leaderboard on a score of +4.

Taking to social media after the round, Lowry posted: "Birdieless in Madrid…. The search continues tomorrow." Earlier, Lowry had reposted a short video of himself playing four holes in 40 seconds for the DP World Tour's social media channels, a four-hole stretch which Lowry jokingly referred to as 'The worst four holes of my year,' captioning the post: "It didn’t get much better today."

Lowry will need to start fast on Friday if he is to have any chance of making it to the weekend and replicating his T-12th placed finish at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth last weekend.

“Not bad, it’s another decent week, lot of good golf in there what more can I say but more solid golf but no real fireworks but a frustrating week really,” Lowry said after his final round.

“Lovely start on Thursday and then you’re going out playing for pride today trying to finish as high up the leaderboard as I can but I did OK.

“The shot on 18 was difficult and I played it lovely. It could have gone horribly wrong! Look, another few ranking points, Race to Dubai, whatever. Ultimately I am looking for bigger things than that.”
