Rory McIlroy has opened up about calling off his divorce earlier this year admitting: “Sometimes life can get too much.”

The Co Down golfer broke his silence on his marital blip in conversation with Patrick Kielty on The Late Late Show.

He said he had to take some time out from the golf course to realise “what was really important to me”, adding: “I think sometimes life can get too much.”

In June, Rory McIlroy confirmed he and his wife Erica Stoll would remain together, just weeks after he filed divorce papers in a Florida Court.

The pair married in 2017 at Ashford Castle in Co Mayo and have a child together, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, who was born in 2020.

McIlroy told fellow Co Down native Kielty: “There’s been a lot going on this year, golf wise and then obviously personal-wise as well. I had to take a little bit of a break and get away from the game.

“Golf and the business of golf had become all consuming for me and I needed to take a bit of time away to realise what was actually important. Friends, family, enjoying myself, I need to enjoy that time.”

Asked if his daughter might follow in his footsteps one day, McIlroy – who leads the Irish Open going into the final day today – said: “We got her her first real clubs for her birthday this year.

“She’s taken a little bit of interest, if she did I would be 100pc supportive but at the same time I wouldn’t mind if she did something different.”
