Manchester City are still waiting to assess the full extent of the injury suffered by Nathan Ake on international duty.

City defender Ake was taken off on a stretcher during Holland’s 2-2 Nations League draw with Germany on Tuesday. Ake pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring issue as he tried to control the ball in the opposition half in the game in Amsterdam.

‌It swiftly became apparent Ake was in serious distress when the referee signalled straight away for the Dutch medical team to come to the aid of the 29-year-old. Ake looked close to tears as he struggled to stand, the defender ultimately unable to continue as he was carried off and replaced by Arsenal ’s Jurrien Timber.

Post-match, Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman said: "It looks like a muscle injury for Nathan Ake, though I am not certain."

City boss Pep Guardiola will hope Ake is not out for a prolonged period, with the Premier League champions facing a hectic fixture schedule over the coming weeks. On Saturday, City - who have won all three of their opening League games - host Brentford, who were the last team to beat them at the Etihad Stadium in the league, back in November 2022.

‌City get their European campaign underway four days later at home to Inter Milan in the revamped Champions League. Title rivals Arsenal then visit the Etihad on September 22, with Guardiola keen to have as many options at his disposal for the visit of Mikel Arteta ’s side.

Arsenal have their own issues in the treatment room, with new £28million signing Mikel Merino already sidelined and Martin Odegaard picking up an ankle injury during Norway's 2-1 win against Austria on Monday. Their team doctor, Ole Sand, told Norwegian outlet VG : "Such ankle injuries often take at least three weeks. Anything other than that is just a bonus. And then it can take longer.

"What we have so far obtained from the MRI examination in London is that there is probably no fracture in the ankle." Sand added: "Regardless of the MRI images, his response to the rehabilitation in the next few weeks is the most important. It will start carefully on the bike, carefully in relation to what he can tolerate from pain. Then you take it gradually."
