Conor McGregor made a series of cryptic posts on social media as his absence from the UFC looks stretch to set into its fourth calendar year.

McGregor hasn't fought since breaking his leg in defeat to Dustin Poirier in July 2021, though he was scheduled to return in June before a broken toe ruled him out of a contest with longtime foe Michael Chandler. Both McGregor and Chandler were keen for the fight to be re-fixed for UFC 310 in December, but UFC head-honcho Dana White put an end to that talk when he suggested that McGregor wasn't going to fight until 2025 at the earliest.

"As of right now, I believe that Conor will not fight this year. Conor’s saying he wants to fight, he wants to fight in December. We’ll see how it plays out," said White last week.

In an apparent response to the decision, McGregor took to Instagram to share a training video of him working on a punching bag which was captioned #FreeTheMac.

McGregor later took to Twitter and simply posted: "When I get free."

While White has put the brakes on a McGregor comeback in the latter part of 2024, he did reveal on Irish radio this week that he has been trying to tie down Croke Park for a McGregor fight night for a long time.

He told Off The Ball: "I've been trying to do Croke Park for a long time with Conor McGregor and we couldn't get it done because they wouldn't keep the public transportation open, they had a curfew on us. There were lots of things that made it tough."
