Five units of Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB) are currently battling a gorse wildfire near the Dublin Mountains.

Large plumes of smoke from the gorse fire can be seen at the small neighbourhood of Barnacullia, near Sandyford, with two water tankers, along with members of An Garda Síochána, also in attendance at the scene.

The Woodside Road is closed while emergency crew tackle the large blaze, with videos shared on social media showing thick smoke covering the area.

Those living in Barnacullia, Sandyford, Stepaside, Ballinteer or surrounding areas have been advised to keep their window and doors shut, as wind is driving heavy smoke across the area.

In a statement shared on social media, the DFB said: "Five fire engines including a water tanker are at a gorse wildfire near Sandyford. The Woodside Road is closed. A strong wind is driving smoke across a wide area."

In an update posted a short time later, the DFB added: "We are receiving a high volume of calls from members of the public in regards to the gorse fire on lower three rock In the last hour, we have processed approximately 200 calls. We appreciate you taking the time to call us.

"We are currently fighting the fire. Currently, 4 Water Tenders 2 Water Tankers 2 District Officers are on scene. If you are affected by the smoke, please close your windows. We are also protecting properties affected by the fire.

"We are working closely with @gardainfo and @ESBNetworks."

The DFB added: "Smoke is still heavy in the area. Firefighters are working to protect properties in the vicinity."

Oisín O'Connor, Councillor for Glencullen-Sandyford, has urged local residents to remain indoors while the DFB tackle the blaze.

"Thank you @DubFireBrigade for acting so quickly," he wrote in a message shared on X. "Anyone living near Barnacullia, Sandyford, Stepaside, Ballinteer and surrounds, I'd advise closing windows and staying indoors. It's still really thick in the air."
