Experts have discovered a diet plan which includes soups and shakes could help individuals with type 2 diabetes to potentially send their condition into "in remission". The research indicates that following this eating diet alongside a lifestyle programme can lead to a "significant" weight loss for those affected.

The study, which featured in the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology journal, scrutinised the outcomes of a year-long health improvement programme for people living with the disease.

Participants in the programme swap out their regular meals for a low-calorie "meal replacement" diet consisting of soups, shakes, and bars for an initial period of 12 weeks. After this intensive start, they are encouraged to gradually reintroduce wholesome foods and receive ongoing support to keep the weight off.

NHS England has highlighted the paper's findings, suggesting its Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission programme could be a game-changer for "thousands" battling the condition. Earlier this year, it was announced that the scheme is set to be expanded across England, effectively doubling its reach.

The latest report draws on data from 7,540 participants who joined the programme between September 2020 and the close of 2022. Out of these, around 945 completed the full year and provided blood samples for analysis, reports Gloucestershire Live.

After a study, it's been revealed that 32% of participants in the group went into diabetes remission, with an average weight loss of 15.9kg some even dropping an impressive 17.4kg.

Dr Clare Hambling said: "The NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme can have a huge impact on the lives of participants, and it's brilliant that these findings show a large number of those who completed it have seen life-changing benefits including major weight loss and type 2 diabetes remission."

She further emphasized the significance of tackling obesity, which poses a critical health threat in the UK: "We know obesity is one of the biggest threats to health in the UK and will be one of the biggest and most costly challenges for health systems globally, so seeing such encouraging outcomes from our programme shows that obesity can be tackled head-on, and we're looking forward to scoping any further expansion to this programme in due course."

Dr Elizabeth Robertson, of Diabetes UK, added: "Diabetes UK is proud to have funded over a decade of research that has forged new frontiers for people with type 2 diabetes and put remission on the map."

Adding to the body of evidence, Dr Robertson acknowledged the program's benefits for individuals with diabetes: "These latest findings add to the real-world evidence that the NHS England Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme can help thousands of people living with type 2 diabetes on their weight loss and remission journey, which we know is tough and having support is critical.

"We hope to see even more people benefiting in years to come and an increase in referrals to the programme especially for people recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and in younger people where the impact of type 2 diabetes and remission from it is greatest."
