Kellie Harrington has announced her retirement moments after winning her second Olympic gold medal.

The Dubliner outclassed Wenlu Yang of China in the final of the 60kg division and cruised to a 4-1 split-decision victory.

With the win, Kellie becomes the first female boxer in Irish history to defend her Olympic title and solidifies her place in Irish history as one of our greatest ever athletes.

Speaking to RTE moments after being declared Olympic champion, the 34-year-old announced that she was planning to retire on top.

"It just gives hope to all these young kids. All these young kids, all these young teenagers, it just gives hope to them. It gives hope to the people of Ireland, that's what it means.

"But this one was for me."

When asked about her strategy for the fight, Kellie said: "Happy, just to be happy. Just to smile, be happy and enjoy it.

"It's the last hurrah. I'm done. I always said I wanted to retire a champion. That's it.

"Let me just say once again, Bob's your uncle, Fanny's your aunt, goodnight Irene."
