The hunt for Jay Slater ended in heartbreak and his family now face the devastating task of bringing their 'beautiful boy' home.

Jay, 19, was reported missing on June 17 while on holiday with friends in Tenerife, leading to a desperate 29-day search. Sadly, any hope of finding the apprentice bricklayer alive was extinguished when his body was found just metres from his last known location in the Rural de Teno park, northwest of the island.

Officials in Tenerife cautioned that identifying the cause of death would take some time due to the 'very deteriorated' state of the body. Following the autopsy results, authorities have pieced together a picture of how the British teen met his tragic end, revealing heartbreaking details about his final moments.

A preliminary autopsy has been completed, indicating that the cause of death was 'a fall or plunge from height due to the broken bones he suffered'.

A Civil Guard spokesman confirmed that Jay's injuries included several broken bones, stating: "The body of the man located yesterday has been identified of that as Jay Slater through fingerprint comparison and identification. The result of the preliminary autopsy points to the cause of death being a fall or plunge from height due to the broken bones he suffered."

In a report by Mail Online, a source close to Jay's family revealed that they have found some 'very small comfort' in the likelihood that Jay's death was instantaneous. After the formal identification of Jay's body, his devastated mother Debbie shared: "I just can't believe it we're here with the embassy staff waiting for an update and now it's come the worst news. I just can't believe this could happen to my beautiful boy. Our hearts are broken.", reports the Mirror.

The family is now enduring another painful wait as they hope to return to the UK with Jay's body, following the devastating news. A heartbroken Debbie Duncan is now appealing for funeral donations on the fundraising page previously used for the search efforts, hoping to give her cherished son 'the send-off he deserves'.
