A woman in her 80s has sadly died following a horror road crash in Meath, the fourth fatal collision on Irish roads on Wednesday and the fifth fatality to be announced.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the collision involving two cars on the R148 just after 2pm, and rushed to the scene. The driver of one of these cars, a woman in her 80s, was fatally injured.

The driver of the second vehicle was taken to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The local coroner has been notified, and arrangements will be made for a post-mortem examination. An examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators has since concluded and the road has re-opened.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision near Enfield to come forward, namely those who may have dashcam footage.

A spokesperson said: “Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Trim Garda Station on 046 948 6140, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

Five people have lost their lives in collisions on Irish roads on Wednesday, with 109 people killed on Irish roads since the start of the year.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a man, aged in his 40s, was struck and killed by thugs in a suspected stolen car while walking home on the coast road in Baldoyle.

Just after 2pm, a young motorcyclist in his 20s lost his life following a single-vehicle collision in Finglas on the Old North Road. Around the same time, a collision between two cars occurred in Meath on the R148 which took the life of a woman in her 80s.

Just before midnight, a man and a woman, both in their 70s, were killed after the car they were travelling in collided with another vehicle on the N56 at Kilmacrennan in Donegal.
