Corkman Brian Barry-Murphy has confirmed his departure from his role as Head Coach of the Manchester City's Elite Development Squad - with the Premier League champions also confirming his exit.

Murphy (45), who could now thrown his hat in the ring for the vacant Ireland job, arrived at City in 2021, having previously being in charge of Rochdale.

A former Cork City, Preston, Sheffield Wednesday, Bury and Rochdale player, he moved into coaching while still playing and took the number one job at Rochdale in 2019.

City snapped up the highly-rated Irishman in the summer of 2021 and he won back-to-back Premier League 2 titles with the club’s Elite Development Squad.

Academy Director Thomas Kruecken said: “Brian has made a huge contribution in his time at the Club.

“Guiding our Under-21s to two successive Premier League 2 titles was a superb achievement and he deserves great credit for the role he played.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Brian for all of his efforts during his time at the Club and to wish him well for his future career.”

Murphy, meanwhile, took to social media to confirm his exit and hint at the reason behind his departure.

Once on Stephen Kenny’s radar as a potential member of his Ireland coaching ticket, the former Cork City man said he felt he had taken the squad as far as he could.

“I have some news people,” he wrote on Instagram. “I have made the decision to leave my position as Head Coach of Manchester City's Elite Development Squad, which feeds into Pep Guardiola's first-team.

“I take great pride in what we have achieved during my tenure and have enjoyed an amazing three years working with some of the world's best coaches and players - I will always be thankful for the opportunity to work at such a great club.

“However, I feel I have taken the role as far as possible and feel ready for a new challenge. Looking forward to the next chapter. See you there.”
