A man has died following an early-morning crash in Co Longford. The single-vehicle collision happened on the N55 near Ballymahon around 12.45am.

Emergency services treated the driver of the car, a man aged in his 30s, at the scene where he later died. His body was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar where a post-mortem will take place.

Gardai have closed the road for a forensic collision investigation and local diversions are in place.

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact gardai. A Garda spokesman said: "Gardaí are investigating a fatal single-vehicle road traffic collision that occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, 8th July 2024 in Ballymahon, Co. Longford. The collision occurred at approximately 12.45am on the N55.

"The driver of the car, a man aged in his 30s, was treated by emergency services at the scene but later passed away. His body was taken to Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar where a post-mortem will take place in due course. The road remains closed this morning with an examination by Forensic Collision Investigators currently under way. Local diversions remain in place.

"Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time of the collision are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Ballymahon Garda Station on 090 6432303, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
