Missing teen Jay Slater left the Airbnb he was staying in because he was 'hungry', according to a new theory by TV detective Mark Williams-Thomas.

The investigator spoke to reporters about his interview with Ayub Qassim, 31, also known as 'Johnny Vegas', who drove Mr Slater to the rental property from Playa de las Americas.

Despite Spanish police dismissing Mr Qassim and another unnamed man as irrelevant to their investigation, Mr Williams-Thomas believes there's more to the story.

Mr Qassim claims that Jay, a 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from Lancashire, England, was alive when he left the Airbnb after a party following a music festival. However, Jay disappeared on June 17 while attempting to walk back to his accommodation in Los Cristianos, a journey that would have taken approximately 11 hours on foot. It's thought that he missed his bus and decided to walk instead.

The search for Jay, which involved helicopters, drones, and search dogs, has been called off by Tenerife's Guardia Civil. Meanwhile, Mr Williams-Thomas, who is conducting his own independent investigation separate from the official police response, alleges that Mr Qassim offered to drive Jay back the morning after the party in Playa de las Americas, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Unveiling the "real reason" Mr Slater reportedly snubbed a lift, the ex-Met Police detective shared: "Qassim said to him 'Chill, mate, I'll drop you off later, when I wake up', but he said Jay said, 'Nah, I need some scran, I'm hungry'."

Jay is said to have informed Mr Qassim that a lady had mentioned buses to Los Cristianos ran every 10 minutes, yet Mr Qassim countered there was no bus and told him, "Do what you like", before heading back to sleep.

Mr Williams-Thomas recounted that Mr Qassim remembered next receiving a call from one of Jay's mates stating he was found in a ditch having been "bitten by a cactus".

The sleuth noted Mr Qassim kept mum about the identity of the second bloke Jay went to Masca with and clammed up regarding the supposed nicking of a Rolex watch, which some reckon might be tied to Mr Slater's vanishing act.

The enigma of Jay's disappearance lingers nearly three weeks after he vanished. It's reported that Jay's holiday digs were a mere stone's throw from the club hosting the music fest's after-bash.

In the meantime, it's understood that Jay's kin are eager for the Spanish coppers to get cracking with drones and more kit over Rural de Teno park, where his mobile was last pinged.

A source disclosed to the Sun: "They are desperate for permission to be granted that will allow them to use the specialist equipment they've identified."

"They've been speaking to experts who have suggested items that could help - things like [radar] tracking gear, drones and kit which can help at night-time too."
