Roy Keane has threatened to leave England if the Three Lions lift the Euro 2024 trophy.

The Corkman has lived in Cheshire in England for many years after moving to the area while playing for Manchester United.

But the 52-year-old joked that the prospect of manic celebrations if England win their first major championship since 1966 might force him to emigrate.

Keane, speaking on Stick to Football, brought to you by Sky Bet, said: “When we do the TV we have to praise Manchester City – if a team wins something you have to give them credit. I’d be emigrating, obviously, if they win it – probably Melbourne, Sydney!”

England are preparing for a quarter-final clash with Switzerland on Saturday, although Gareth Southgate and his players have already been heavily criticized for some lacklustre performances in reaching the last eight.

Despite some questionable peformances from Southgate's side, Keane thinks all will be quickly forgotten if England finally win a major trophy.

Keane said: “People should stop complaining about the performances from England because they are still in the tournament and that’s the most important thing.

“Imagine if you were playing well and got knocked out the tournament, then the reaction would be worse. "England have brilliant attacking players who have got the team out of jail and that’s what I thought would happen before the tournament.

"It’s been a while since the last time you thought England were playing well on a consistent basis, but that struggle is fine when you’ve got match-winning players in your side.

"If England get to the semi-final or final playing ugly, no one will complain about it.”

Keane's stance was supported by former international Jill Scott, who won the UEFA Women's Championship with England in 2022.

Scott said: “I think England will get to the final. If England go on to win EURO 2024, no one is going to look back at the tournament and say how badly England played.

"No one is going to remember who played and how many minutes each player got, it’s all about getting the trophy and their medals and that’s it.”
