Taoiseach insists he is 'telli

Taoiseach Simon Harris has insisted that he is “telling the truth” that the next general election will be in 2025.

As it was put to Tánaiste Micheál Martin that the election would be around November 8 or 15, he responded, “Who gave you that date?!” as he insisted the Government will go full term. He did not, however, commit to saying that it wouldn’t be held this side of Christmas.

News on Thursday that the Budget was being held a week early on October 1 led to intense speculation that the election may be held early. It does not have to take place until March 2025. Dates being suggested in Leinster House include November 8, 15 and 22.

When these dates were put to the Tánaiste on Morning Ireland, he joked them away.

“We just had a local and European election and we're gonna have a general election within the next eight months,” he said.

“We will have a budget on October 1 and we will have a Finance Act and Social Welfare Act.

“People are speculating, I’m saying we are going full term.”

Asked if he was saying there would not be a general election this side of Christmas, Mr Martin did not directly rule out the prospect but once again stated the “Government will go full term”.

Meanwhile, on RTÉ’s Today with Claire Byrne, the Taoiseach said he is asked a question about the election “about a dozen times a day”.

“The answer is always the same, which is the beauty of when you're telling the truth,” he said.

“The reality is the government will run its full term. The full term means that the government will run into 2025.

“The government's term ends, I think, on March 22 of next year. It's my intention, I know it's the intention of the leader of Fianna Fáil, the intention of the Green Party, to see this work through. We have a lot of work to do.”
