An elderly man has lost his life following a tragic workplace incident in Offaly on Thursday afternoon.

Gardaí and emergency services were rushed to the scene of a fatal workplace accident at a premises in Garryhinch, a small neighbourhood in Offaly, close to Mountmellick. The man, aged in his 70s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

His body was removed from the scene to the morgue in Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore, where a postmortem examination will take place in due course.

Gardaí confirmed that the Health and Safety Authority had been notified following the tragic accident and that a file would be prepared for the Coroner's Court.

A Garda spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: “Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to a fatal workplace accident at a premises in Garryhinch, Co. Offaly on Thursday afternoon, 4 July.

“A male in his 70s was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body was removed from the scene to the morgue in Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore, where a postmortem examination will take place in due course.

“The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) have been notified. A file will be prepared for the Coroner's Court.”
