The body of a fisherman reported as missing has been discovered by locals on the island of Inishbofin, Co. Galway.

The Malin Head Coastguard was notified at 10.15pm on Wednesday that a fisherman was overdue and presumed missing off Inishbofin.

The coastguard initiated a search of the north and east coastlines of the island with coastguard helicopter R118 and lifeboats from Clifden RNLI.

The coastguard helicopter confirmed just before midnight on Wednesday that the body of the missing fisherman was discovered by local members of the community on the northern shore of the island.

"The Coast Guard extends its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased," said a spokesperson for the Irish Coast Guard.

A Gardai spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Letterfrack assisted the Coastguard and RNLI in a search and recovery operation in Inishbofin, Galway.

"The body of a man, aged in his late 50s, was recovered from the water in the early hours of this morning, Thursday 4th July, 2024. It has since been removed to the mortuary in University Hospital Galway where a postmortem will take place in due course.

"A file will be prepared for the Coroner's Court."
