Man recovered from crashed car

A 47-year-old man who was found dead yesterday in a vehicle that had struck a roadside ditch in Westmeath may have been there for a number of days before being discovered, gardaí believe.

The deceased has been identified as Marcin Nowosielski, who was last seen in the early hours of Sunday, June 30.

He was found at the wheel of his black Nissan Almera around 6:40pm yesterday. The vehicle had left the road and entered a ditch at the side of the R395 at Teevrevagh, Castlepollard.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted and Mr Nowosielski was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out in the coming days.

It is unknown when his car left the road, but gardaí believe the incident is likely to have occurred in the previous days. They are now appealing to any road users who were in the area to make contact with investigators.

“Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information on the movements of Marcin Nowosielski or his car, a black Nissan Almera with registration 02 CE 3568, since the early hours of 30th June 2024, to come forward,” said a spokesman.

“Gardaí are also appealing to any road users who were on the R395 at Teevrevagh, Castlepollard, between the early hours of Sunday, 30th June, and Tuesday, 2nd July, to contact Mullingar Garda Station on 044 938 4000.”

Just hours later, around 5:30am this morning, a second road-traffic accident involving two vehicles occurred nearby on the R394, which links Mullingar and Castlepollard.

The passenger in one of the vehicles, a man aged in his 80s, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. The driver of that vehicle, a woman in her 60s, sustained serious injuries and remains in a critical condition at Midland Regionsal Hospital Tullamore.

The driver of the other car, a man in his 30s, and the passenger, a man in his 20s, were taken to Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar with less serious injuries.

Elsewhere, a mother and her young daughter were killed in a collision involving a lorry between Swinford and Foxford in Mayo yesterday evening, bringing the death toll on Irish roads to four in just 24 hours.

Superintendent Liam Geraghty said today that the recent incidents illustrated the dangers that can affect anyone on our roads.

“No one sets out with the intention of causing or being involved in a traffic collision, especially one that results in fatalities. We often take using our roads as a routine activity, yet it remains the most hazardous task we engage in daily.

“An Garda Síochána extends its deepest sympathies to all families mourning the loss of loved ones due to road traffic collisions,” he added.

“An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to all road users—no matter how you use the road—to exercise extreme caution and stay safe. In particular, we urge all drivers to please slow down and protect everyone on our roads.”

Anyone with information on any of these incidents can also contact the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
