Shocking footage has emerged of a horror machete attack in north Dublin that left a teenager with serious injuries - as a local councillor condemns those involved saying they have a “blatant disregard for the public.”

The horror incident happened around lunchtime on Tuesday, July 2 in Poppintree Parade, Ballymun when two males on a scrambler bike armed with a large machete and baseball bat attacked another male at a shop.

CCTV footage of the shocking incident from inside the shop shows the victim falling onto the ground inside the front door as a security guard tries to protect him.

Both the victim and security guard fall to the ground but the security guard manages to get back on his feet to prevent one of the males armed with a machete from entering the shop.

The security guard quickly closes the shop door and pulls down the shutters as the two armed males remain outside.

A still from a CCTV camera outside the shop shows the two culprits - one sitting on a scrambler bike holding a baseball bat while the second male stands behind the bike brandishing the large machete knife.

Local councillor Keith Connolly expressed his shock and horror at the incident saying those involved have a “blatant disregard for the public.”

Cllr Connolly said: “There has been an issue for some time around that area of intimidation and open drug dealing and this has been raised at the Joint Policing Committee for a number of years now.

“What happened on Tuesday is shocking. Locals are in complete shock. It’s a busy area and for this to happen at lunchtime when kids are off school is absolutely shocking.

“Those involved have a blatant disregard for the public and it was very traumatic for those who witnessed it in an area that should be safe. More resources need to be pumped into the area,” he said.

One eyewitness is heard saying on a video of the aftermath of the scene “I am after seeing the whole lot of it there. Two lads on a scrambler, two machetes in each hand jumped off and tried to take yer man’s head off. Yer man on the front of the bike had a big baseball bat too. They tried to do harm to him. I am not joking. He must be in bits. Fair play to the security guard, shoved the lads off and banged the shutter down.”

An ambulance and several squad cars arrived at the scene within minutes and tended to the injured male before taking him to the Mater Hospital for treatment.

Local councillor Conor Reddy also condemned the terrifying attack and warned “Someone will be killed.”

“It’s terrifying and adds to the sense of fear in the area. It’s not an isolated incident in the area. There were shots fired last week and an assault.

“Someone will be killed,” he warned.

“Kids witnessed this incident and it is traumatising for them and anyone else who saw it happen,” he said, adding that the Government needs to get involved to stop the gangs and violence the area is experiencing and to “pull people out of the cycle of crime, violence and drugs.”

“Youth workers are doing unquantifiable work but they need to be funded permanently.”

So far, no arrests have been made but gardai confirmed investigations are ongoing.

In astatement, An Garda Siochana said: “Gardai attended the scene of an assault on Tuesday, July 2 at approximately 1pm in Poppintree Parade, Ballymun.

“One man, aged in his late teens, was seriously injured and taken to Mater Hospital for treatment.

“Investigations ongoing.”
