A man, 80s, has died and three other people have been injured following a two-vehicle road traffic collision in Co. Westmeath on Wednesday morning.

The collision occurred on the R394 at Gartlandstown, Castlepollard, Co Westmeath at approximately 5.30am.

The male passenger of the first car (aged in his 80s) was pronounced deceased at the scene. The female driver (60s) was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore hospital for treatment for serious injuries.

The male driver of the second car (30s) was also taken to Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar, for treatment for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time. The male passenger (20s) was also taken to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore hospital for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

The road is currently closed for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

A Gardai spokesperson said: "Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R394 between Mullingar and Castlepollard, Co Westmeath, between 4.45am and 5.45am this morning, Wednesday 3rd July 2024, are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Mullingar Garda Station on 044 938 4000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
