A Jet2 flight headed to Glasgow was unexpectedly diverted to Cork Airport in the early hours of Wednesday morning after the crew declared a mid-air alert.

Flight LS176 departed from popular summer holiday island Tenerife at 10.16pm on Tuesday, July 2, and was on its way to Glasgow International Airport when the cabin crew issued a 7700 squawk code at around 1.30am.

A Squawk 7700 code indicates an emergency onboard the aircraft and may be issued due to technical, environmental, or medical issues that results in an emergency situation.

The plane was flying just off the south coast of Ireland when the medical emergency was declared and the flight was subsequently diverted to Cork Airport.

The diversion was later confirmed to have been caused by a passenger requiring urgent medical assistance.

After landing at Cork Airport the passenger was safely transferred to the care of a medical team and taken to hospital.

The plane had to refuel at Cork Airport before continuing its journey and Flight LS176 eventually landed in Glasgow at 4.30am this morning, almost three hours after it was originally scheduled to arrive at the airport.

In a statement, a Jet2 spokesperson said: "We can confirm that flight LS176 from Tenerife to Glasgow diverted to Cork in the early hours of this morning (July 3), due to a customer requiring medical assistance.

"The aircraft subsequently departed for Glasgow Airport."
