A man aged in his 50s has died in a single-vehicle collision in Westmeath this evening.

The incident occurred on the R395 at Teevrevagh in Castlepollard around 6.40pm, when the car that the man was driving collided with a roadside ditch.

He was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead by emergency services. His body remains at the scene.

The R395 is currently closed and local diversions are in place as forensic collision investigators carry out a technical examination following the crash.

It’s the second road death that occurred on Tuesday, after a mother and child were killed in a collision with an articulated lorry in Mayo just an hour before the crash in Westmeath.

They were also pronounced dead at the scene between Foxford and Swinford. The woman was aged in her 40s, while the second victim was described by gardaí as a female child.

Gardaí investigating the single-vehicle collision in Westmeath have asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have dash-cam footage to make contact with investigators.

Gardaí are currently at scene of a single-vehicle fatal road traffic collision involving a car that occurred on the R395 at Teevrevagh, Castlepollard, Co Westmeath,” said a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána.

“At approximately 6.40pm this evening, 2nd July 2024 Gardaí were alerted to a vehicle which had collided with a roadside ditch. The male driver of the car, aged in his 50s and sole occupant of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body remains at the scene, at this time,” they added.

“The R395 at Teevrevagh, Castlepollard is currently closed with local diversions in place and a technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators will be conducted tonight Tuesday 2nd July, 2024.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Teevrevagh area are asked to make this footage available to gardaí.”
