Weather experts have just dropped the latest sizzler of a forecast - predicting that parts of the UK could be basking in a glorious heatwave next month, thanks to a subtropical Mediterranean airstream sweeping across the nation.

The mercury is set to soar on July 14, with Londoners and those in the surrounding counties tipped to enjoy the highest temperatures of a sweltering 28C.

But it's not such good news for Ireland, with the temperatures expected to peak at 17C on the same date. Parts of Donegal and the north west could be as chilly as 12C, a far cry from the heatwave likely to be enjoyed by our neighbours.

This latest burst of summer comes amid a spell of topsy-turvy weather that has seen temperatures yo-yo from the high 20s down to the more temperate high teens.

Met Eireann confirmed the next few days would be a mixed bag of changeable weather with spells of grey skies full of drizzly showers, interspersed with drier and brighter periods as July gets underway. This week will be windy at times too, particularly later on Wednesday and Thursday, with temperatures generally below normal for early July, especially in the northwest.

Both the UK and Europe will be entering the peak summer months of July and August.

Although Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather suggested there is still a “good bit of uncertainty around next weekend”, Met Eireann’s current indications for the weekend predict that it will “continue showery and rather cool for the time of year”.

Below is the Met Eireann's outlook for this week:

Wednesday

Damp or wet to begin on Wednesday with outbreaks of rain and drizzle clearing eastwards to a mix of sunny spells and showers in the afternoon. Becoming increasingly windy or blustery as the day goes on with moderate to fresh westerly winds increasing strong along western and northern coasts. Highest temperatures of 14C to 20C, mildest in the east and south.

Breezy with a mix of clear spells and scattered showers on Wednesday night, mainly affecting the west and north with largely dry conditions further south and east. Lowest temperatures of 7C to 10C with mostly moderate westerly winds fresh to strong and gusty near coasts.

Thursday

Thursday will be an unseasonably windy day with sunny spells and scattered blustery showers. Highest temperatures of 13C to 17C with moderate to fresh and gusty westerly winds, strong to near gale along western and northern coasts.

Friday

Current indications for Friday suggest a mostly cloudy start to the day with outbreaks of rain, most persistent in the south, clearing to sunshine and showers in the afternoon, some heavy in the north and northwest. Winds will be mainly light to moderate southwest or variable becoming moderate westerly in the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 13C to 18C, coolest in the west and north.
