Cristiano Ronaldo surprisingly broke down in tears following his penalty miss in extra time as Portugal survived a brave effort from Slovenia to advance to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

The five-time Balon d'Or winner stepped up to take the spot kick in extra time of the Last 16 clash between Portugal and Slovenia, and his effort was saved by Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak. In an emotional moment for the player, Ronaldo was seen crying at the interval when the replay of the penalty was played on the big screen in the Frankfurt Arena.

Ronaldo had to be consoled by teammates Diogo Dalot, Bernardo Silva & Bruno Fernandes before heading back out for the second half of extra time.

In the aftermath of his emotional outburst, Ronaldo has been jeered and criticised by many online including notorious online trollers Ryanair.

Ryanair compared the striker's moment of emotion hilariously to "when you forget to check in online".

However, Ryanair did find themselves on the receiving end after one user fired back to the same post of Ronaldo in tears "When you have to book through Ryanair."

Cristiano Ronaldo played every minute of the action but couldn't get going on the attack, having the fewest amount of touches of any outfield player during the 90 minutes of normal time. The Al-Nassr striker is still yet to score in this tournament, and he couldn't have had a better chance to open his account with the missed spot-kick.

Darragh Maloney and Ray Houghton on commentary for RTÉ compared the emotional moment for Ronaldo to a moment of realisation, a realisation that maybe the 39-year-old's time at the top is over.

Despite missing the penalty in extra time, CR7 stepped up first for Portugal in the penalty shootout and slotted it home to give Portugal the lead in the shootout. But it was Portugal's goalkeeper Diogo Costa that would take the headlines away from Ronaldo with the Porto keeper saving three consecutive penalties to keep his country alive in the tournament.

Portugal now moves on to face France next in the quarter-finals on Friday in Hamburg.
