There is no break to the rain and showers in sight this week as heavy rain and “unseasonably windy” weather blast the country.

According to Met Éireann, this week will be quite unsettled with rain and showers spreading from the Atlantic and limited dry intervals. Temperatures will also be cool for the time of the year, dropping to lows of 13C during the day.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather also warned that both strong winds and heavy rain would hit the country later in the week.

He wrote: “A risk of some strong winds Wednesday and Thursday and then a low system moving across the country Thursday night into Friday with heavy rain and strong winds on South coast. July you say.”

Unfortunately, the weekend and into next week will continue to see more rain and showers. Here is Met Éireann’s weather forecast for the coming days and weekend:

Tuesday

Mainly cloudy this morning with patchy outbreaks of rain and drizzle spreading from the west. The best of any bright or sunny intervals will be over the southern half of the country this afternoon. Highest temperatures of 14 to 19 degrees, coolest in the northwest, in light to moderate southwest to west winds.

A cloudy night with more persistent rain developing in the west and northwest early on, spreading eastwards overnight. Some mist and hill and coastal fog will develop too. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in light to moderate southwest winds, fresh on western coasts.

Wednesday

A damp and cloudy start to Wednesday with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. The rain will clear eastwards by afternoon, followed by sunny spells and scattered showers. Becoming breezier through the afternoon with light to moderate southwesterly winds increasing moderate to fresh westerly. Highs of 14 to 19 degrees, mildest in the southeast.

Wednesday night will be breezy with a mix of clear spells and scattered showers. Showers will mainly be in the west and north with drier conditions elsewhere. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in moderate to fresh westerly winds.

Thursday

Unseasonably windy on Thursday with sunny spells and scattered blustery showers. Westerly winds will increase fresh and gusty in the morning, strong at times in the west and north. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees.

Thursday night will be largely dry with clear spells at first. Cloud will thicken from the southwest overnight with rain spreading to many areas by morning. It will stay mainly dry in Ulster. Winds will ease light southerly overnight with lowest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees.

Friday

Current indications suggest a rather wet start on Friday with outbreaks of rain, most persistent over the southern half of the country.

The rain will clear eastwards to showers in the afternoon, with some heavy showers possible in the west and north. Quite cool with temperatures generally of 12 to 15 degrees, though it will be milder in Munster and south Leinster with highs of 15 to 19 degrees. Light to moderate variable winds, becoming northwesterly later.

Weekend

Sunny spells and scattered showers on Saturday. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees in moderate westerly winds. Further showers and rain on Sunday and the early days of next week.
