Spain, Italy and Greece are set for a sizzling heatwave over the coming days, new weather maps reveal. This Thursday, July 4, will see parts of Spain, especially Seville and areas between Cordoba and Jaen and near the Portugal border, reaching sweltering heights of over 40C.

Much of the rest of the country won't be far behind, with temperatures predicted in the mid to upper 30s, reports the Express. So severe is this forecasted heatwave that Spanish weather experts have issued a yellow warning for the region of Southern Andalucia.

Travellers holidaying in Italy and Greece can expect their thermometers to reach the 40C mark a little bit later, on Tuesday, July 16. The worst-hit areas will likely be around the Italian city of Bari and the neighbouring regions around Catania, and Larissa in Greece, where temperatures are forecasted to peak at 39C. Near the border with Macedonia, however, officials predict the mercury could soar to 40C.

All of this comes as the summer getaway season gets into full swing, and thousands jet off for some well-earned holiday sun. But tourists should take heed: like Spain, both Italy and Greece have issued their own weather advisories encouraging caution amid the extreme heat for visitors and local residents alike.

Europe weather
Heatwaves are coming to some popular European hotspots

"Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and getting worse because of climate change," warns William Spencer, climate and first aid product manager at the British Red Cross. "Sadly, we have seen cases already this year of the tragic impact high temperatures can have on human life.

"High temperatures make it harder for the body to cool itself and we all need to take care to manage the health risks of heat. If you are travelling to a country experiencing extreme heat, there are several steps you can take to keep yourself and others safe.

"We would advise people to plan ahead for the effects of heat on their trip, making sure they know how to recognise the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke."

Ian Simpson, a forecaster from Netweather, noted that not all of Europe will be sweltering, as northern areas might escape the brunt of the heatwave. He explained: "Although southern and eastern Europe can expect some more hot weather during the coming fortnight, it looks unlikely that it will turn hot in north-western Europe for a while.

"This is because we will have a strong high pressure area over the Azores and a strong jet stream running on its northern flank, bringing persistent west to north-westerly winds and some bands of cloud and rain coming in off the North Atlantic. It doesn't look likely to be especially wet (unlike July 2023), but it will often be rather cool and cloudy."
