A man in his 80s has died following a single-vehicle collision involving a quad bike on Achill Island, Co Mayo.

The man was reportedly killed around 1:45pm on Sunday when his quad bike overturned, trapping him underneath, on the road to Purteen Harbour, off the R319 near Keel.

Gardaí, fire brigade personnel and members of the local coastguard unit are currently attending the site of the accident, and road diversions are in place.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body will be transferred to Mayo University Hospital where a postmortem examination will take place. Gardaí confirmed that there were no other injuries.

The road is currently closed for technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigations.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána confirmed the fatality to the Irish Mirror in a statement, and is appealing for witnesses to the accident to contact Gardaí. It read: "Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the vicinity of Keel, Achill Island, Co. Mayo, this afternoon, Sunday 30th June 2024, between 1pm and 2pm, are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Westport Garda Station on 098 502 30, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
