Aidan O'Shea shows incredible

O'Shea appears for club side the day after getting subbed in the dying minutes of Mayo's defeat to Derry.

The prolific centre-forward got one of Mayo's points in Saturday's game before getting taken off in injury time of the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final. O'Shea was having a good performance and was defending Chrissy McKaigue with intent.

With O'Shea off the pitch, McKaigue would be free from his grasp and would score a dramatic equaliser, taking the match to extra time.

Eventually, Mayo would go on to lose on penalties to Mickey Harte's side. The Connacht side will count themselves unfortunate to find themselves in this position, after only losing one championship game in normal time was the one-point loss to Galway.

Surprisingly, O'Shea came off the bench for his club Breaffy at half-time to play in a league game against Charlestown the very next day after the defeat to Derry.

Also coming off the bench for Breaffy was Matthew Ruane, who was also subbed off late on in the defeat.

Playing the next day calls into question McStay's decision to sub off O'Shea and other vital players for his side. It's arguable that O'Shea & Ruane had more in the tank to last until the end of the match.

Former Armagh star Oisin McConville spoke on The GAA Social Podcast for BBC, believing that Mayo had too many key players on the bench by the end of the game.

"I would agree with a lot of the talk afterwards that a lot of the big Derry players stood up towards the end of the game, where a lot of the Mayo players that had stood up were on the bench at that stage", said McConville.

"That was obviously due to the game going to extra time, but it felt like Derry were stronger finishing."

With Kevin McStay's surprising decisions, Mayo will have to wait another year for the elusive All-Ireland and try to break the curse of '51.
