Luke Shaw back in England training with Gareth Southgate to make changes for Slovenia

Luke Shaw could feature for England against Slovenia on Tuesday night after finally making a return to full training.

Shaw has been training alone at England's training base, the Spa & Golf Resort Weimarer Land, since touching down in Germany for Euro 2024. The left-back has not played since injuring his hamstring while playing for Manchester United in February but has given Gareth Southgate a boost on the eve of England's final Group C fixture in Cologne.

The 28-year-old joined the Three Lions' session on Monday morning and looked in good spirits. After being criticised heavily for their performance in the 1-1 draw against Denmark last week, Southgate is expected to make changes for Slovenia, with England needing a win to be sure of top spot.

Kieran Trippier has filled in at left-back in the opening two games against Serbia and Denmark, but the Newcastle full-back is naturally right-footed and has made the side look unbalanced at times, with he and Phil Foden both cutting inside from the left flank. Shaw is the only specialist left-back in the 26-man squad and his return could make a significant impact for Southgate.

Anthony Gordon said last week that Shaw was on the “right path” in returning to full fitness. “Yes, he looked like that. He’s back in training now and doing really well," the Newcastle forward said. "I did a bit of my rehab with him and he was way far ahead of schedule. He was doing great, which is good.”

Shaw was something of a surprise selection from Southgate given his lack of match fitness. His United team-mate Harry Maguire was cut from the initial 33-man squad for the same reason following an injury, but Shaw flew out to Germany and has been working tirelessly to regain sharpness.

Speaking ahead of the Denmark game on Wednesday evening, Southgate said: “Luke won’t be involved tomorrow, no. He’s actually on track to where we thought he’d be originally. “We were hoping, a couple of days ago, we might accelerate that a little bit, but he needs a bit more volume work.

“He didn’t train with the rest of the group today, because there are days when he needs to do more than the rest of the group and there are days when he needs to recover when the others are pushing. He’s still in and out with the others but operating on his own programme as well.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold has started the first two games in central midfield but could lose his place against Slovenia, with Conor Gallagher, Kobbie Mainoo and Adam Wharton potential replacements.
