Man, 40s, dies in Donegal diving tragedy following search and rescue operation
Another man aged in his 60s was found alive and has been airlifted to hospital in Galway, where he continues to receive treatment
A man has died after getting into trouble in the water near Teelin Pier in Co Donegal this afternoon. It’s understood that he had been diving with another man who is receiving treatment in hospital after being recovered from the water.
The two men were located a short time ago following a search and rescue operation in the area, which had involved members of An Garda Síochána and the Coast Guard.
One of the divers who was aged in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other, who is aged in his 60s, was treated at the scene before being airlifted to University Hospital Galway (UHG).

A spokesman for An Garda Síochána said the local coroner had been notified, and a post-mortem examination would take place in the coming days.
“Gardaí received a request for assistance from the Coast Guard following an incident in Teelin Bay, Co Donegal on Saturday afternoon, 22nd June 2024,” he told the Irish Mirror.
“The incident occurred at around 12.30pm. Two men were recovered from the water. One of these males, a man in his 40s, was later pronounced dead at the scene. The second man, aged in his 60s, is receiving treatment at University Hospital Galway.”
A diving event, the North-West Dive Rally, is taking place in Donegal this weekend, with competitors coming from across the country to dive at sites including Sliabh Liag and Malin Beg.
A number of emergency crews from various agencies including the Rescue 118 helicopter and the Killybegs Coast Guard Unit took part in the search operation. The mission was coordinated by the Malin Head Coast Guard Station.
