A teenage man has been arrested in relation to an alleged assault of a woman who was walking a forest trail in Cork earlier this month.

Gardaí are continuing to appeal for information in relation to the incident, which occurred on the evening of Thursday, 6 June at a walking trail in Island Wood, on the outskirts of Newmarket, Co. Cork.

The alleged assault occurred at approximately 7.10pm on the evening and the woman did not require medical attention following the incident.

Gardaí are particularly appealing to anyone who was walking, cycling, running or visiting the Island Wood walking trails and may have spotted any unusual activity to come forward. They are also appealing to people who may have camera footage, including dashcam, to make it available to them.

In a statement, An Garda Síochána said: "Gardaí investigating an alleged assault in Island Wood, Newmarket, County Cork on Thursday 6th June 2024, have arrested a male juvenile in his teens. The male is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in West Cork.

"Gardaí in Mallow are continuing to appeal for witnesses to this incident. Any road users who were travelling in the vicinity of Island Wood on the outskirts of Newmarket, and surrounding areas on Thursday the 6th June, between 4.00pm and 10.00pm, and who may have camera footage (including dash cam and action cameras) is asked to make this available to Gardaí.

"Any person who was walking, cycling, running or visiting the Island Wood walking trails that evening and who may have noticed any unusual activity, is asked to contact investigating Gardaí. Anyone with information which may assist Gardaí in their investigation is asked to contact Mallow Garda Station on 022 31450, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station."
