Russell Crowe reckons Ryan Tubridy has been through “a very heavy situation” in recent times.

The Oscar-winning actor has been friends with the former Late Late Show and RTE Radio 1 presenter for several years. They have remained in touch since Ryan, 51, and RTE became engulfed in a payments controversy last summer.

Speaking ahead of his concert with his band The Gentlemen Barbers at the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin on July 1, Russell Crowe was reluctant to make a comment on the circumstances of Tubridy’s departure from RTE.

He said: “All I would say is that he is a fine man, he has a wonderful intellect and a wonderful heart, he’s so well read, so fascinating and interesting to talk to about particular subjects. When he’s interested in something, he has a way of finding something fresh to say about it. I enjoy his company.

“It was a very heavy situation for him but I have no comment to make. I don’t really know enough about the situation.”

The 60-year-old, who won an Oscar for his lead role in historical drama Gladiator, returns to Dublin with his Indoor Garden Party show.

His first manifestation of Crowe the rock star was in 1981 when he released three singles, including I Just Want To be Marlon Brando, under the stage name of Russ Le Roq.

He laughed: “You gotta remember, you gotta remember. You’re asking me about a series of decisions I took when I was 16! At that point in my life, I had decided I wanted to live a creative life.”
