An Post will honour Ireland’s medal-winning athletics champions with a specially designed national postmark.

The Team Ireland European winners including Christopher O’Donnell, Rhasidat Adeleke, Sophie Becker, Phil Healy, Sharlene Mawdsley, Tom Barr and Ciara Mageean will all be honoured with a uniquely designed postmark that will be sent all over Ireland.

The postmark will be applied to millions of regular-sized letters and cards posted in Ireland over the coming month as they are sorted through An Post hubs in Athlone, Dublin and Portlaoise.

David McRedmond, An Post CEO said: “Our superstar athletes inspire and delight the whole nation.

“Their hard work, perseverance and sheer joy is a lesson to us all and we congratulate them on their outstanding success at the European Athletics Championships. We hope this postmark carries Ireland’s admiration and pride on letters across Ireland and the world.”

Ireland were crowned European Champions in the 4x400 metre mixed relay in Rome on Friday, June 7 in a pulsating final.

"It means so much because we knew what we could do as a team. We have worked so hard. I am so grateful to be a part of this and a privilege to be part of this team,” Adeleke told RTÉ after the race.

"It's unbelievable, it is everything I ever dreamed of," gold medal winner O'Donnell added. "When I went into the blocks it felt like I was doing it for the entire country. We've been on a journey this team, we were performing miracles making finals."

The victory is the first European gold Ireland have secured in athletics since Sonia O'Sullivan in 1998.
