Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns has spoken about the heartbreak of suffering two miscarriages over the last year.

On Saturday, the Cork South-West TD shared the news on social media that she was “delighted” to announce she expecting a baby girl with her partner Barry, adding that she was “initially hesitant” to make the post.

She wrote online: “While I’m delighted to share this news now, I was initially hesitant because like so many other couples hoping to start a family, ours has not been a straightforward journey. But all the signs look good for this pregnancy so we are really hopeful.”

Speaking to Miriam O'Callaghan on Sunday, Holly opened up about her difficulty having a baby, telling the RTE Radio One presenter that she found comfort in hearing other women speak about their experiences, as it made her feel “less alone”.

"Like a lot of couples out there we learnt the hard way that it's not always that easy to plan [a pregnancy],” Holly said on Sunday.

"I went through two miscarriages in the last year," said continued.

"It's something we know happens to quite a lot of people - I think it's one in three women experience it and we just don't hear a lot about it,” Holly told Miriam.

"I have to say, hearing other women speak about it, I found maybe comforting. You feel like you're less alone, that you're not the only one going through it.

"So I do think it's really important that we kind of talk a little bit more about that. It's not easy."
