Armagh boss Kieran McGeeney suggested that the CCCC was selective when suspending only Connaire Mackin following their clash with Derry.

Mackin was given a one-match ban and so sat out the draw with Galway for an incident where his foot appeared to make contact with Conor Glass’s head while the Derry player lay on the ground during the counties’ meeting earlier this month.

It wasn’t spotted by referee David Coldrick on the day but was dealt with retrospectively by the disciplinary body, though McGeeney drew attention to another incident in the same game where no action was taken against a Derry player.

He said: “I was probably disappointed that there was only one thing seen. You take it on the chin, two things highlighted and one thing seen. That sort of thing is hard to take.

“Everybody seen it on TV, there was two things highlighted. There was a lot happened this weekend but the same countymen didn’t spot their own. That sort of stuff.

“But, to me, the CCCC, in fairness, over the last number of years has been extremely fair. I found that they’ve got their act together. They are extremely fair in the way they do things so we would have no complaints that way, it’s just I suppose is to see two things highlighted and one thing followed through on.”

McGeeney will have Mackin back for an All-Ireland quarter-final, their third in as many years, though they lost both of those on penalties and haven’t reached the last four since 2005.

“Last year the League was up and down for us but it was a first division League. There was only a point in any game, one way or the other. However, winning games does give you more of a bounce, despite it mightn’t be in the first division.

“So, I think there’s more of a bounce in the fellas. I think some of our key players are a lot fitter this year and stronger. There’s definitely more of a bounce with the players than there was last year.

“I think we were playing well last year, we pushed Derry the whole way, we were poor in the first half against Monaghan but had a decent second half.

“I think we’re in a good place but, you know yourself, it’s another two weeks. But there’s a good buzz with the boys, you can hear that … and it was nice to finish top of the group which will give them another bounce going in.”
