We're already past the mid-point of June and so far, it's been one of those Irish summers to which we're all so accustomed - leaving the house with sun cream on but with an umbrella just in case.

For the most part, this summer has been largely dominated by unsettled conditions. There has been the odd scorcher but a thunderstorm or rain warning has never been too far away and, unfortunately, that trend looks set to continue for the next week or so.

A weather expert has offered hope, however, for the final week of June to bring with it the summery conditions that we're all so desperately craving.

Alan O'Reilly, who mans the ever-reliable @CarlowWeather account on X (formerly Twitter) has been closely examining weather models for the remainder of the month and is tentatively suggesting some optimism for the last week of June.

He posted: "Final week of June might offer some hope? A long way off in weather forecasting terms but something to keep the hope of summer weather alive, charts from 10 days away so sadly accuracy is low."

This comes after several counties found themselves falling under a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning on Saturday and though the coming days will see a welcome period of settled weather, the return of rain is anticipated towards the latter end of the week.

Met Eireann has delivered its verdict for the week ahead and pinpointed Wednesday as the most pleasant day, with highs of 19C and very few showers anticipated.

A spokesperson for the national forecaster said: "High pressure will build bringing more settled weather to start the week, but it will turn more unsettled later on."

The north and west of the country are set to be worst-affected by the low-pressure system expected next weekend, which will bring with it plenty of rain and showers.
