Ireland's love affair with France is contentious to say the least.

For every Battle of Fontenoy (as won by the Irish Brigade in 1745), Brian O'Driscoll's hat-trick, the 2024 Six Nations Marseille win, the sparkle of Paris and Cannes, Catherine Deneuve and Lea Seydoux...

There is the overarching spectre of Thierry Henry's handball that's so hard to ever see fading from memory, more recently last year's disappointment at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

And yet according to the latest poll when it comes to the current France soccer team from coach Didier Deschamps to players such as Kylian Mbappe, Olivier Giroud, Antoine Griezmann, N'Golo Kante, Eduardo Camavinga, William Saliba and le collectif, the Irish is chorus is 'Je t'aime'.

A recent survey found that one fifth of Irish football fans believe France will lift the Euro 2024 title, will be the last men standing following the July 14 final in Berlin.

And with the surprise carriage behind that of England as Gareth Southgate's crew are fancied to win by a significant proportion of the Irish soccer fans - despite the mickey-taking and the general merriment every time they fall over.

The support for the football's coming home mob isn't particularly hard to identify all the same; it is a fair bet the majority of those surveyed support English clubs.

The England squad encompasses Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City, Everton, Chelsea, West Ham, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Brighton.

And covers a lot of our bases with maybe Spurs and Leeds as the glaring omissions.

There is some further support for the Iberian Peninsula, with 10 percent thinking Spain and eight per cent thinking Portugal can deliver.

How reliable are these figures? Well some people got it right on the night as far as last night is concerned predicting the Germans were, er, on the march. Five-one was a decent return against Scotland.

And a reflection on the the in eight Irish people polled who thought, before a ball had even been kicked, that the host nation could go all the way.

Betting firm Ladbrokes commissioned the survey with their spokesperson Nicola McGeady noting: “Those surveyed are definitely in line with the odds, with France and England coming out top in the pecking order to go all the way at the Euros.”

WHAT THE RESEARCH AMONG IRISH FANS REVEALED

WINNER ALRIGHT? 20% believe France will win the Euros; 15% believe England will win the Euros; 12% believe Germany will win the Euros; 10% believe Spain will win the Euros; 8% believe Portugal will win the Euros.
