It couldn’t happen, could it? By 8.30pm tonight Derry’s Championship hopes will either have been reignited or extinguished and Westmeath will travel to Páirc Esler fully determined to make sure they progress at the expense of the Oak Leafers.

Just 11 weeks ago, Derry were crowned Division One champions after beating All-Ireland champions Dublin on penalties in Croke Park.

Touted as genuine contenders for the biggest prize in Gaelic Football this summer, their campaign simply hasn’t got going after a hat-trick of defeats to Donegal, Galway and Armagh.

With each defeat, the belief seemed to have drained from Mickey Harte’s side, but they have an opportunity to get their season back on track this evening and it is one they must grasp.

Their 11-point loss to Armagh in Celtic Park earlier this month has undermined their chances and a draw won’t suffice as Westmeath’s scoring difference is superior.

Dessie Dolan’s side so nearly put Harte’s native Tyrone out of the Championship at this juncture last season with John Heslin’s injury-time free narrowly missing the target.

Taking the scalp of Derry would see Westmeath through to the last 12 of the Championship and into Monday’s draw for next weekend’s preliminary quarter-finals.

The best Derry and Westmeath can hope for is an away trip next weekend with Armagh and Galway guaranteed of finishing in the top two places, but the battle for third place will ensure a keenly-fought battle this evening and we’ll have all the latest build-up and team new ahead of throw-in at 7pm. The match is being shown live on GAAGO.

FRC proposals at a glance

The Football Review Committee have set out to make Gaelic Games “the most enjoyable amateur games in the world to play and watch” and they’ve come up with some radical rules changes in order to achieve that aim.

Starting this weekend in Mullingar, the ‘Sandbox Games’ will feature players not longer involved in the 2024 Championship with several new rules on trial, most notably four points for a goal and a new two-point scoring zone from outside a 40-metre arc.

Other rule changes proposed include starting games with one-on-one contests at midfield with the other two midfielders joining the rest of the players behind the 45-metre lines.

New kick-out rules will also be tried with kick-outs taken from the small rectangle or all from the 20-metre line have having to go beyond the new 40-metre arc.

Goalkeepers will only be able to receive possession of the ball in the large rectangle and teams will be required to keep three players, including the ’keeper inside their own 65 at all times.

The attacking mark will be amended to be taken inside the 20-metre line with the ball kicked outside the 45 and the advantage rule will no longer be restricted to five seconds.

Dissent, tactical or delaying fouls will be punishable with a free move forward 30 or 50 metres.

The rules will be tested again in further games in Claremorris, Portlaoise, Armagh and Limerick in the coming weeks.
