Liverpool supporters were left hoping Dominik Szoboszlai 's comments about his Anfield chances had been lost in translation.

Hungary talent Szoboszlai was in action for his country on Saturday as they took on Switzerland in their Euro 2024 opener. However, while he's one of the key men for his national side, he was in and out of the team in his first year at Anfield.

Speaking ahead of the game, Szoboszlai appeared to be grateful for his limited role in the closing weeks as it allowed him to steer clear of injury. The 23-year-old started just one of Liverpool's last six league games as Jurgen Klopp 's side saw their title challenge fade in April and May.

Some Reds fans took real issue with the former RB Leipzig star's comments. However, others were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt over comments translated into English from the original Hungarian.

"I've just finished a difficult season, but since this was my first in the Premier League, I'm not dissatisfied with my performance, although I definitely want to have a better season next time," Szoboszlai said, per the Hungarian Football Federation.

"I usually think positively, so it didn't bother me that I played a smaller role at Liverpool at the end of the season. At least the chance of injury was lower and I could focus on the European Championship earlier."

After reading the English translation, fans made their feelings known. "Hope that's been translated wrong, because that statement is absolutely embarrassing if that's what he actually said," wrote one.

"We were competing for four trophies and this guy was focused on the Euros?" asked another. A third, meanwhile, said: "Great start but it kind of showed where his head was second half of the season."

Plenty of others questioned the translation, though. "Definitely taken wrong. Everyone needs to calm down," was one verdict, while another argued: "You’ve mistranslated or just misunderstood what’s he’s said lads".

Szoboszlai wore the captain's armband for Hungary's opener against Switzerland, but Hungary found themselves 2-0 down at the break through goals from Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer before Szoboszlai set up a goal for Barnabas Varga to reduce the deficit. It wasn't enough, though, with Breel Embolo adding a late third for the Swiss.

He became the youngest skipper in Euros history, though, and was grateful to Hungary boss Marco Rossi for the trust placed in him. "A few days ago, I found out that I'll be the youngest team captain of all time at the European Championship; this is a great honour for me and at the same time, I'd like to thank Marco Rossi for trusting me and for giving me the opportunity to lead the team to the European Championship," he said.
