A motorist was nabbed by Gardaí driving four times the legal limit of alcohol over the weekend.

Gardaí attached to the Delvin Roads Policing Unit (RPU) in Meath on Friday night and stopped a car driving erratically and gave the driver a breathalyser test to check if alcohol impairment was behind the dodgy driving.

The driver failed the roadside breath test and was subsequently arrested. A reading of 90 micrograms of alcohol per 100 ml of breath was recorded at the station when the driver was brought back, a reading that is over four times the legal limit.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Delvin RPU patrolled Meath on Friday night and stopped a car driving erratically. The driver failed a roadside breath test and was arrested.

"A reading was 90 micrograms of alcohol per 100 ml of breath was recorded at the Station —over four times the legal limit!”

Penalties on conviction for drink driving vary depending on the amount of alcohol that has been detected in your system.

The court will also take into account whether this is your first offence or otherwise. Under the penalties introduced by the Road Traffic Act 2006, all convictions for drink driving result in a mandatory disqualification from driving.
