Ex- Manchester United players regularly question the club’s transfer policy in a star-studded WhatsApp group.

The Red Devils have endured a torrid season which has seen them finish a lowly eighth in the Premier League and crash out in the Champions League group stage. United could salvage an FA Cup and Europa League football with an unlikely victory over Manchester City on Saturday.

Even if they do, it may not be enough to keep beleaguered boss Erik ten Hag in a job, with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Kieran McKenna and Thomas Tuchel touted as potential successors. United’s struggles have been underpinned by a haphazard-looking transfer approach, which has seen vast sums splurged on players who have failed to deliver.

The state of the club and in-coming players are often debated on an ex-players’ WhatsApp group, former United star Ashley Young has revealed. “Nowadays, with players that are retired, we’ve got a WhatsApp group,” Young told talkSPORT.

“We’ve got ex-United players in there. At times, we do talk about it [transfers]. But when you’re in the dressing room, you’re not thinking, ‘why have we signed this player?’

“You’re trying to integrate them into the squad. I had fantastic times there and you want the best out of every single player who walks through that door.”

Asked what the ex-United players’ WhatsApp group was called and who was in it, Young divulged: “It’s called Band of Brothers. There’s quite a lot.

Asked who the most vocal member is, Young said: “Everyone. Honestly, every day that’s group’s going off. It’s like we’re still at training, that banter’s still going. Someone’s getting it every day, basically.”
