Jockey stretchered off track and race declared void after horse suffers fatal fall

An amateur jockey was stretchered off the track after an incident in which his horse died and the race declared void.
William Easterby, son of trainer Tim Easterby, was riding Betty Baloo from his father’s stable in a handicap chase at Market Rasen. The mare who had won three of her six starts over fences was one of the leading fancies for the 3m race.
But she came down at the first fence and while the rest of the field continued to complete a circuit but when the runners approached the fence where the incident occurred the race was halted.
Officials raised flags to stop the race while Easterby and Betty Baloo were attended by doctors and vet at the fence, which is just past the winning post.
Betty Baloo could not be saved and Easterby was taken to hospital for further assessment. Easterby, 29, has ridden 40 winners under rules while also running his own point-to-point team and assisting his father.
A stewards inquiry was held into the incident and considered the circumstances surrounding the deployment of the ‘stop race’ flag.
The report said:. The Clerk of the Course, Racecourse Executive, Veterinary Officer were interviewed.
“The Clerk of the Course explained that after a runner was injured on the first circuit there was insufficient room for the runners to pass safely, the decision was made in conjunction with the Head Groundsman to initiate the ‘stop race’ procedure and deploy the ‘stop race’ flag.
“The Stewards declared the race void.”
