US publication Vulture has attracted the ire of Irish social media users over a tweet about actor Barry Keoghan which has been dubbed 'embarrassing' and 'xenophobic'.

Keoghan was one of the many celebrities who attended this year's Met Gala, which was held at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday

The Dubliner rocked a bold look as he made his red carpet debut with his popstar girlfriend Sabrina Carpenter at the annual fashion extravaganza.

Keoghan donned a tawny velvet three-piece suit custom-made by Burberry with a frill-trimmed dress shirt, a silky cream ribbon tie, and a tall black top hat for the star-studded event.

The 31-year-old Irishman's unique outfit was one of the biggest talking points of the night, with US entertainment news website Vulture sharing a picture of Keoghan on the Met Gala red carpet along with a caption which has attracted plenty of criticism online.

In a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, they wrote: "Hello little lassie, couldja point me in da direction of me missus? She's got a grand 'me espresso' at home that I better be drinkin'".

The caption, which seems to mimic an Irish accent, has been accused of indulging in lazy Irish stereotypes and Paddywhackery, with a number of Irish social media users calling out Vulture over the tweet.

"I'm exhausted at Irish actors being mocked like this media that should know better," wrote one Irish X user. "We've worked very hard to move away from these stereotypes. Publicly making fun of someone because of their accent is just not on. Shame on you @Vulture."

Another social media user commented: "It's not often irish twitter unite on anything recently but this tweet is certainly something all of us can agree is a pretty horrendous compilation of words."

Other users pointed out that mimicking the accent of other nationalities would be deemed unacceptable, with one person writing: "I'm trying to think, if the person in the picture was from any other place or culture, would you lay as thick into the stereotypes? Or would you think 'actually no, that would be incredibly poor taste...'"

Another added: "Didn't anyone @vulture think for a second that this could be a racist comment. If you did the same to anybody of any other race there would rightly be uproar. This is not OK. Do better."

Another X user described the tweet as "a new low in the ‘let’s make fun of Irish folk’ trope," branding the caption as "horrendous".

Most users agreed that the caption was in poor taste, with one person writing: "This is what you thought of when you looked at this photo? Incredibly awful caption," while another added: "People can see this xenophobia."

And a third person said: "This is embarrassing. Delete it. Repent."
